Background

Samsung UK opened their new experience store in August 2019, establishing a hub in the heart of Coal Drops Yard in London’s Kings Cross. The multifunctional space showcases a range of Samsung’s consumer and professional technologies, hosts business events, product launches and a programme of community-focused activities.

The centre piece of the experience store is the curved 1.2mm pixel pitch display measuring 10m by 6m and installed on a custom-made concave bracket. The screen sits in the ‘amphitheatre’ area of the store as the focal
point for events, presentations and streamed content. Video applications including immersive games run on other state-of-the art display technologies including the ‘The Wall’ MicroLED display, the first to be installed in Europe by the Korean tech giant.

Naturally the smooth running and continued functionality of Samsung’s technologies in their flagship store is of the utmost importance.

Challenges

The venue was a full build project with engagement from a range of stakeholders including architects, designers, and a number of contractors all working collaboratively to bring the space to life. Project timelines were
challenging with the additional pressure of performance penalties for completion milestones meaning that works by suppliers were often happening concurrently at site. The requirement to install the LED displays on custom, concave bracketry at the focal point of the space required a partner that was both efficient, effective and could work to overcome challenges for the good of the project.

Since the opening of the site, focus has been on supporting and maintaining the installed technology to ensure displays are fault-free and fully functional for the busy schedule of events throughout the year.

Solution

DPi were appointed due to their unrivalled experience with LED product installation services. Working alongside the bracket supplier, manufacturer and the architect, DPi installed the concave display in a timely manner, ensuring all quality checks, alignment and commissioning were complete to the highest standard. Flexibility in working hours, often making allowances for other contractors in the space, helped achieve the timely installation not just of the centre-piece LED but of all other large format display technologies.

DPi continue to provide maintenance and support services for the venue, assigning dedicated multi-disciplined resources to meet the needs of the site on a priority response time.

Benefits

The site and its operators are confident in the support that DPi provide for the installed display technologies and live event support. With technical resources assigned to the site and responding within the same business day (on an industry best response time to site) functionality issues are resolved efficiently with minimum downtime of the event space. Event support services involve robust testing of technologies prior to events to ensure the smooth running of proceedings and an excellent event experience for all.

For our flagship experience store there was only one partner for us for the installation and maintenance of the custom curved and MicroLED displays. DPi came recommended by our internal service team (as our warranty support partner for our whole display range) and with their knowledge and experience of LED technologies we are able to ensure the displays at KX are consistently operational. This supports not only our busy event schedule at the site but ensures we can showcase our latest and innovative technology in the best possible light to both existing and prospective customers.
